Shopping with a Purpose

I so fell in love with this shop in Yangon, that I had to go back when I returned to the city after traveling around the country. Hal Day is a shop that helps “…over 40 artisians, groups, families, small businesses or disadvantaged people that have taken a new opportunity to build fulfilling, healthy and sustainable livelihoods”. Not only does spending money do good for people less fortunate that yourself, you also get the neatest things to take home in a super cool shopping bag made out of newspaper! With the plethora of products to choose from, if you leave empty handed I really don’t know what to do you with you πŸ™‚ There are small curiosities I wouldn’t have discovered myself hadn’t they been pointed out to me by my friend. A very content self left with a total of three(!) bags filled with:

  • organic green tea from Shan State
  • beeswax balm for anything from dry skin to mosquito bites
  • a pair of trousers with a local cut
  • a top to go with the trousers
  • toddy palm jaggery, a Myanmar traditional sweet
  • recycled plastic card holder
  • recycled plastic pouch for my documents while traveling
  • a cover that turns a wine bottle in to a flower vase

…and a big happy smile πŸ™‚
